Time now to take a look at what’s happening in the world of sports.
Joining us in the studio is our sports editor Paul Neat.
Happy New Year, Paul.
Happy New Year.
Let’s start with baseball.
Major League Baseball has gained another Korean star.
Yes, a KBO All-Star too. Infielder Kim Hye-seong has joined the LA Dodgers.
It was reported on Saturday by Kim’s agency that he has signed a three-year deal worth 12-point-5 million U.S. dollars, with an option for two more years.
Kim signs from the Kiwoom Heroes just in time before his 30-day negotiating window for MLB clubs was due to expire on Tuesday.
In eight years with the Heroes, Kim Hye-seong has a career batting line of point-304, point-364, and point-403 with 211 steals from 953 games.
According to Yonhap, that’s the most in KBO since 2018.
The new MLB season is due to start on March 18th with the Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, Japan.
Moving on to football.
Former Jeonbuk manager Kim Sang-sik is the name on everyone’s lips in Vietnam, it seems.
Yes, that is because he has led the Vietnam national team to the ASEAN Championship title.
Vietnam beat holders Thailand 3-2 on Sunday in Bangkok in the final second leg for an aggregate score of 5-3.
It was an epic final too with the pendulum swinging back and forth, but eventually, the win was truly sealed in the 20th minute of added time.
It’s Vietnam’s first ASEAN title since 2018 when fellow Korean Park Hang-seo was in charge, and third overall.
Vietnam went unbeaten throughout the entire tournament, winning seven from eight, scoring 21 goals -10 of which came in the knockout stages, and naturalized Brazilian-born striker Nguyen Xuan Son ended the tournament as MVP and top scorer with seven goals.
Kim Sang-sik has been in charge of the Golden Star Warriors since May last year.
Meanwhile, it was announced today that Shin Tae-yong has left the Indonesia national team.
Indonesia were knocked out in the group stage.
Finally to figure skating.
Cha Jun-hwan and Kim Chae-yeon are heading for the World Championships
Yes, over the weekend they finished first in their respective national team selection competitions.
Cha Jun-hwan earned a combined score of 281.02, including 90.53 in the short program.
Highlights include successfully executing a quadruple salchow and triple axel.
It was his ninth consecutive national title.
For Kim Chae-yeon, it was her first earning 213.01 points.
71.13 were earned in the short program, and 141.88 in the free skate.
She overcame a fall during a triple lutz but maintained composure throughout, even landing seven triple jumps.
The ISU Worlds will be held in Boston this March.
Alright, thanks for that Paul.
See you next week.
Thank you.
