S. Korea and Japan hold defense consultive meeting for first time in nine years

South Korea and Japan held a consultative meeting on defense policy in Tokyo on Wednesday, marking the resumption of such talks after nine years.
Lee Seung-beom, South Korea’s director-general for international policy at the Ministry of National Defense, met with his counterpart, Atsushi Ando, at Japan’s Defense Ministry.
South Korea’s government said the two representatives discussed future cooperation including regional security and enhancing defense cooperation.
It’s the first such meeting since 2015, and was decided by the two countries’ defense ministers at last month’s Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore, amid efforts to deter threats from North Korea.
