Riots in Turkey over hostility towards Syrian immigrants


Now to Türkiye where Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed on Tuesday that police had detained 474 people involved in attacks targeting Syrian communities across the country overnight.
In the central city of Kayseri, properties and vehicles owned by Syrians were vandalized, while some were set on fire, fueled by social media posts that a Syrian man had sexually abused a female child relative.
Türkiye closed its main border crossings into northwest Syria on Tuesday, after troops came under attack from Syrians angered by the violence.
The unrest which began late on Sunday spread across several provinces and a district in Istanbul, according to Türkiye’s MIT intelligence agency.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan blamed the anti-Syrian attacks and riots on racism stoked by his political opposition.
Türkiye severed ties with Syria after the 2011 Syrian civil war, where they supported rebels looking to oust current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
