Protests continue as investigators hand over responsibility of arrest warrant for Pres. Yoon to police

On the final deadline to detain the troubled South Korean leader, investigators decided to let the police take over the execution of the arrest warrant.
We connect with our Park Kun-woo standing by at President Yoon’s residence in Yongsan.

So Kun-woo, tell us more about the CIO’s call.

Good morning Dami.
I’m standing near the presidential residence in Yongsan-gu District, central Seoul, where protests both for and against President Yoon’s arrest are taking place.
First of all, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials said Monday morning that it decided to pass all responsibility for arresting Yoon to the police and that it had submitted anofficial document on Sunday.
The police said they are currently conducting an internal legal review of the document and would announce their decision later.
The CIO is set to file to extend the period of the arrest warrant following its failure to detain Yoon last Friday.

And protesters both for and against Yoon’s detention have been out there for days now.
Is it any calmer now?

Protesters from both sides have been rallying for the fourth consecutive day since Friday.
They have been here day and night despite the cold weather, heavy snowfall over the weekend, and rain this morning.

Police officials estimated that around 10 thousand protesters had gathered at the site as of 8 PM on Sunday.
Around me, there are hundreds of protesters opposing Yoon’s arrest, shouting and holding both Korean and U.S. national flags.
Those in favor of Yoon’s arrest have planned to hold a press briefing urging for his arrest from 10 AM, while their rally officially begins at 2 PM.
Police are present to prevent any physical confrontations, while police buses are blocking the roads partially.
Fences are also positioned to separate the opposing groups, and I haven’t witnessed any physical clashes.
That’s all I have for you now.
Back to you, Dami.

Alright, that was our Park Kun-woo, reporting live from Yongsan near the presidential residence.
