Hello it’s the start of a new workweek here in Korea and you’re watching Issues and Insiders.
I’m Min Sunhee.
On the agenda of this year’s NATO summit is “Ukraine and transatlantic security” with the focus on a hammering out a unified response to rampant threats against peace including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and North Korea’s related support.
For more I have Steven Borowiec a staff writer for Nikkei Asia.
Steven welcome back.
I also have Andres Sanchez Braun a correspondent for EFE Spain with us.
Andres it’s good to have you back.
1) Steven, Ukraine will top talks at the NATO summit in Washington D.C. next week.
And according to The New York Times, Ukraine will be offered a “bridge” to membership.
Let’s start with details about this latest development.
2) Andres, do you suppose this new assistance framework is the best possible option against Russia’s aggression against Ukraine?
I mean, what do you believe would be the potential implications of Ukraine joining NATO amid Russian invasion?
3) Meanwhile, Steven, South Korea has been invited to this latest NATO summit, which will mark its third consecutive presence at the gathering.
What would you say is the relevance of this bilateral relationship?
4) And Andres, what do you believe has been promoting partnership between South Korea and NATO in recent years?
5) Steven, keeping in mind the recent defense deal sealed by Pyongyang and Moscow, what are your thoughts on the prospects of North Korean troops joining their Russian counterparts in Ukraine?
6) Andres, should South Korea shift its support strategy for Ukraine to include lethal weapons in the case of closer military cooperation between North Korea and Russia?
7) Steven, moving forward, what might the future hold for NATO in the event of a leadership change in the U.S. following the latter’s presidential election this November?
8) Andres, with regard to South Korea, does its alliance with the U.S. stand to be affected under a possible Trump leadership?
All right.
