On-point: What does far-right National Rally’s win in 1st round of elections mean for France?

France’s far-right National Rally enjoyed some remarkable gains in the first round of the country’s snap parliamentary elections.
Will the far-right be able to rule France for the first time in over 5 decades?
We’re joined by Professor Mason Richey.

It’s good to have you back, Professor Richey.

1. For those of us who may not be too familiar with the far-right National Rally, please do explain what this party represents and where it’s come from.

2. The vote turnout in Sunday’s poll soared to reach 67%, in fact, the highest in a parliamentary election since 1997.
What does such a record figure indicate?

3. If the far-right ends up ruling France, how big of a change will that be for France?
What noticeable changes should we expect to come right away?

4. And the face of National Rally Jordan Bardella also played a huge role in the victory this time, didn’t he?
He may be on his way to become the youngest prime minister of France?

5. A lot still depends on the second round of voting next Sunday.
Do you think the National Rally will manage to push through and achieve a complete victory?
Any variables?

Thanks so much for your time, professor Richey.
