Number of childbirths in S. Korea rises for the first time in 9 years to 242,334 in 2024


Meanwhile on a promising note as we start this new year.
Over 2-hundred-42-thousand babies were born last year marking Korea’s first annual increase in nine years.

For the first time since 2015, the number of births recorded in South Korea in a year has surpassed the previous year’s figure.
In 2023, there were 235-thousand-and-39 births recorded, and according to data released by the Ministry of Interior and Safety on Friday, in 2024, that figure rose by 3-point-1 percent to 242-thousand-334.
Of the new babies born in 2024, 123-thousand-900 are boys and 118-thousand-300 are girls.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths also increased in 2024.
Compared to the figure recorded in 2023, there were 6-thousand-800 more deaths, coming to 36-thousand-700 in 2024.

This brought the country’s population, to 51-million-217-thousand-200 registered residents at the end of 2024, marking a decreasing trend for the 5th consecutive year.

The biggest portion of the population in 2024 was people in their 50s, at 17 percent, followed by those in their 60s making up 15-point-2-7 percent,
while the smallest portion was children under 10 years old at 6-point-1-3 percent.
