It’s time for our Kulture Issue segment. As the year draws to a close, we want to delve into the performing arts sector today which has been thriving in 2024. We’ll do that with Professor Chie Hye-won from Kyung Hee University’s Arts and Cultural Management Program who is joining us in the studio. Welcome Professor Chie!
Q1. Professor Chie, how was the overall performing arts scene in 2024? Some say it has experienced its biggest boom ever, with a surge in attendance at theaters, musicals and other performances.
Q2. Let’s go deeper now, starting with theater. This year, Korean theater has been particularly rich in reinterpretations of classics and creative plays with diverse social perspectives. What were some of the highlights?
Q3. Why do we see those big stars increasingly heading to the stage and what impact has this had on the theater sector?
Q4. Now to something we’ve dealt with a number of times this year: musicals. They are still going strong. What were some of the highlights of the year?
Q5. It’s been a particularly strong year for homegrown musicals. How do you assess this achievement?
Q6. Despite the performing arts world having made some great strides this year, could you tell us about some challenges in the sector or areas where there is room for improvement?
Q7. Last but not least, what are the performances to look out for in 2025?
Thank you very much Professor Chie for your insights today. We wish you a happy new year.
And thank you Walter. You’ll be joining us tomorrow, Tuesday so see you then.
