The Korea Heritage Service says that Goryeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province has been designated as an ancient city.
Goryeong is an area with key historical links to the Great Gaya confederacy.
And since ancient cities hold historical significance when it comes to politics and culture, once designated, they are expected to help bring improvements to the local area.
Goryeong will become the country’s fifth official ancient city along with Gyeongju, Buyeo, Gongju, and Iksan.
It was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site last year.
