Estonian athlete Jaan Roose made history as the first person to cross Italy’s Strait of Messina on foot.
He completed the 3.6 kilometer journey between the Italian mainland and the island of Sicily by walking along a slackline high above the ocean waters on Wednesday.
Roose started the stunt from a 265 meter-high tower in Santa Trada, before walking a distance longer than 30 football fields on a piece of webbed slackline fabric only 1.9 centimeters wide.
He took some 15,000 steps to reach the other side of the slackline, but unfortunately with just 80 meters left from the finishing point, the athlete fell off the slackline, meaning his effort could not be verified and thus he failed to set a new world record.
