Protests both for and against the president’s arrest have continued for days near his official residence.
Our Park Kun-woo was there.
Large protests have continued to take place here for several days.
“I’m standing near the presidential residence in Yongsan-gu District, central Seoul, where protests both for and against President Yoon’s arrest have been taking place for four consecutive days since Friday. People have been here day and night despite the cold weather, heavy snowfall over the weekend, and even sudden rain this morning.”
As weather conditions got better during the day and following the fact that Monday was the last day before the expiration of President Yoon’s first arrest warrant, more people gathered at the site.
Police officials estimated that around 8-thousand-5-hundred protesters had gathered as of 10 AM on Monday.
On one side, hundreds, possibly thousands of protesters rallied against Yoon’s arrest, chanting slogans including “STOP THE STEAL,” while holding both the Korean and U.S. national flags.
Those in favor of Yoon’s arrest continued their rallies for around two hours the same day, while playing loud K-pop music through large speakers installed at the site.
Both sides appeared confident in their stance.
“Actually, our country is in a crisis right now. Because of that, I also want to contribute. Even though I can’t be there physically, I will continue to support through videos and in other ways.”
“Being together makes it feel warmer. The more people gather, the stronger the energy becomes. I really hope we can achieve this by coming together.”
Also at the protesting site, hundreds of police have been present to prevent any physical confrontations, while police buses partially blocked roads.
That comes after police officials said Monday that there were 4 incidents of attacks against police officers, committed by both pro-and anti-protest rally participants.
The police said they will investigate these by tracking down the offenders and taking legal action to prevent similar cases from occurring.
