The South Korean government has requested that North Korea give prior notice before discharging water from its border dam as the peninsula enters the monsoon season.
Ministry of Unification Deputy Spokesperson Kim In-ae told reporters on Friday that North Korea continues to carry out malicious and unauthorized water discharges despite the inter-Korean agreement to let Seoul know in advance.
She also called for the immediate restoration of the communication channel between the two Koreas which has been severed since April last year.
Six people died in 2009, in the border county of Yeoncheon-gun , when North Korea opened the floodgates of its Hwanggang dam without prior warning.
