Time now to take a look at what’s been happening in the world of sports.
With us in the studio is our sports editor Paul Neat.
Good evening, Paul.
Hello.
Let’s begin with some news that broke on Sunday.
The Korea Football Association has appointed a new manager.
Hong Myung-bo is taking over.
Yes, the current Ulsan HD boss Hong Myung-bo has been given the job.
The KFA sent a text to the media on Sunday to make the announcement, and to say that technical committee head Lee Lim-saeng was to hold a press conference at 11 AM on Monday.
Hong’s contract will run until after the 2027 Asian Cup with a review after the World Cup in 2026.
It’s an interesting turn of events as Lee Lim-saeng had last week traveled to Europe to interview two foreign candidates, believed to be Gus Poyet and David Wagner.
Hong had also reportedly turned the job down just last week.
Hong has led Ulsan to two K League 1 titles; one in 2022 which was the club’s first in 17 years -and one in 2023.
He also had a spell in charge of Korea from 2013 to 2014 including for the World Cup in Brazil.
As a player, Hong captained South Korea to the World Cup semifinals in 2002 and played 136 times for his country -a record along with Cha Bum-kun.
Staying with football.
The Euros in Germany and the Copa America in the U.S. are down to the final four, I believe.
Yes, and three of the four quarterfinals went to extra time.
Two even went to penalties.
England versus Switzerland on Saturday went to penalties after a 1-1 draw.
England scored all five of their spot kicks to win only their third shootout from 10 at a major tournament.
Later that day, France knocked Portugal out on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Meanwhile, host nation Germany went out to Spain 2-1 thanks to a last-minute goal in extra time by Mikel Merino.
The Netherlands advance thanks to a 2-1 win over Turkiye and will face England on Wednesday in Dortmund in the semis.
The other game -in Munich -sees Spain take on a France side that is yet to score from one play.
In the Copa America, Brazil are out -they lost to Uruguay in a shootout.
Argentina made it through on penalties against Ecuador, as did Canada against Venezuela.
The semifinals take place on Wednesday and Thursday morning Korea time.
Argentina take on Canada, Uruguay face Colombia.
And finally, to baseball.
The KBO held its All-Star game on Saturday.
Who won?
Team Nanum won, beating Team Dream 4-2.
In front of a sellout crowd of over 22-thousand at SSG Landers Field in Incheon, Team Nanum was made up of players from the Kia Tigers, the LG Twins, the NC Dinos, the Hanwha Eagles, and the Kiwoom Heroes.
Team Dream -KT Wiz, the Doosan Bears, the Lotte Giants, the Samsung Lions, and the SSG Landers.
Choi Hyoung-woo of the Kia Tigers hit a home run and added a double and RBI single before being named MVP.
And at 40 years old, he became the oldest player to be named the All-Star match MVP.
In the build-up to the game, the KBO surpassed 6 million spectators in record time -before the season’s halfway mark.
The league has already had the highest number of sellouts this season.
Alright, thanks for that, Paul.
See you next week.
Thanks.
